Govt steps up forestry protection in south in Laos

January 04, 2011

Vientiane Times

Champassak, Xekong and Attapeu have vowed to form a Joint Committee on Managing Protected Forest Areas located in the three southern provinces, according to a local source. It is expected the joint committee will help enrich and sustain the protected area, which has been harmed by the activities of local people.

Families had settled on land prior to it being declared a protected area, and officials were asked to ensure these people are fairly treated should they need to be relocated. Each province will be required to allocate a specific budget to finance the relocation work, including the construction of relevant facilities at a suitable new location.
